Exercise Therapy in East Asian Medicine

Qi Gong and Taoist exercises are based on the principles of yin and yang, which can be described simply as the elements of “fire” and “water” which bring life to the body. It is the balance of these basic elements which provide the foundation for health. Other forms of yin and yang are blood and Qi. Blood nourishes while Qi warms.

Qi Gong and Taoist exercises are essentially practiced to enhance the unimpeded flow of Qi (energy) and blood through the body. Stagnant blood and blockages of Qi are the roots of disease and any disharmony between these two supporting elements will bring about ill health. A balance will bring about health and vitality.

The key to correct exercise begins with the connective tissues. This includes the tendons, ligaments and cartilage as well as the fascia, a connective tissue membrane which envelopes our internal organs, muscles and other body structures, enabling the body to be unified as one integrated unit.

All physical movement is controlled by the way the body is connected at the joints, so they are the key to balance, co-ordination, and physical strength. As the body ages, it stiffens and becomes more susceptible to injuries. The stiffness experienced by the elderly happens because the connective tissue in the body has atrophied and hence lost its elasticity.

There are many Qi Gong and Taoist exercises which can assist the body in finding balance between the flow of energy and blood, from percussion type exercises and joint mobilising movements to smooth flowing exercises combined with deep breathing are extremely effective means of re- vitalising and strengthening connective tissue of the body and ensuring the micro circulation of blood is optimised.

Qi Gong and Taoist exercises also look at bringing balance between the body and the mind. An understanding of how a person can best adapt to their environment and how to adapt to seasonal variations is also part of this healing system. Living in harmony with nature and living in the present moment are keys to a contented and meaningful life.
